The A Side: A Day in The Life  

 

The Licensing team at UMUK handle all licensing requests from inside and outside the company for the entirety of UMG’s world-leading catalogue of master recordings. It’s a dynamic and collaborative department which works across all UK labels and central teams to clear UMG recordings across new compilations, reissues, and sample clearances. From unearthing decades-old recordings in UMG’s archives to working on brand new frontline releases, no two days are the same, and working as a small but extremely experienced team in the heart of the business the Licensing Department is in constant communication with UMG’s global network of offices, artist management and independent labels to help deliver new releases around the world. 

 

The B Side: Skills & Experience  

 

What You'll Do & Learn 

Be Collaborative 

As a Licensing Coordinator, you'll gain hands-on experience working across one of the world's largest music catalogues, supporting licensing activity for both new releases and historic recordings. 

You will: 

  • Support the coordination of UK, Ireland and international licensing requests across Universal Music Group's repertoire. 

  • Learn how music licensing agreements are prepared and issued by working closely with Legal & Business Affairs and licensing partners. 

  • Develop an understanding of commercial negotiations, including payment terms and deal structures. 

  • Work with artist management teams and internal stakeholders to help secure approvals for licensing projects. 

  • Build expertise in music catalogue research, master recordings and rights ownership across a diverse range of genres and eras. 

  • Help manage relationships with major and independent record labels, gaining insight into the wider recorded music industry. 

  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Catalogue teams and Licensing colleagues to support the successful delivery of projects to deadline. 

  • Work closely with teams across the business, including Legal & Business Affairs, Global Royalties, UMR, UMG Artists & Management and UK labels, developing a broad understanding of how a global music company operates. 

  • Gain valuable knowledge of music rights, licensing practices and Universal Music Group's catalogue and repertoire. 

Be Administrative 

  • You will also play an important role in ensuring the smooth running of the Licensing department by: 

  • Maintaining licensing records and documentation through SharePoint and internal systems. 

  • Supporting accurate record keeping to ensure information is accessible and audit-ready. 

  • Assisting colleagues across Universal Music Group's global network with rights enquiries and licensing-related queries. 

  • Helping to track projects, agreements and approvals to ensure deadlines are met and information is kept up to date. 

  • Developing strong organisational skills while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. 

 

 

Person Specification 

 

We're looking for someone who is organised, curious and eager to learn about the music industry and music rights. 

You'll thrive in this role if you have: 

  • Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy. 

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. 

  • Confidence working to deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders. 

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook. 

  • An interest in music, rights management and the commercial side of the music industry. 

  • A proactive approach, with the ability to use your initiative and take ownership of tasks.
