Reports To: VP, Creative

Location: New York, NY (On-Site, 5 days a week in office)

The Role:

Roc Nation is looking for an Art Director with a proven track record of elevating aesthetics through design, photography, and video; aligning creative and editorial objectives to meet our brand’s goals and expectations. This person should have a holistic understanding of the creative process, with a network of industry professionals at their disposal and a curiosity for new mediums and innovation. Roc Nation is uniquely positioned at the intersection of culture and entertainment, and the Art Director should reflect this throughout their portfolio. 

This role is responsible for creating and implementing policies and procedures that ensure high-quality work. The Art Director provides and oversees design and creative direction support for the editorial, digital, and creative production teams. Command of digital best practices, emerging technologies, and trends in interactive and digital storytelling is required. Candidates must have a sophisticated sense of design and a keen eye for detail. 

Responsibilities:

  • Shape and evolve the visual identity to ensure alignment with the tone of voice and the brand’s aesthetic across all platforms

  • Own all art, design, and content functions, conceptualizing and executing distinct editorial design strategies and typographic approaches

  • Work closely with the Editorial Director and creative partners to create mood boards, visual strategies, and design concepts for social and digital editorial content. Develop compelling, on-brand visual narratives for stories on a wide variety of subjects

  • Ensure storytelling remains fresh, dynamic, and reflective of the brand’s ethos and future-forward vision

  • Be an active thought leader in enhancing the user experience across all digital and IRL projects

  • Art direct bespoke creative for web features and select artists for custom commissions for digital editorial opportunities

  • Lead design of social templates, maintain quality, and initiate redesigns, as needed while working collaboratively with the social-media team

  • Create visuals for quick turnaround articles, as needed

  • Play a key role in the design of tentpole moments and experiential events

  • The person in this role needs to be comfortable asserting a strategic and creative perspective that guides creative and client conversations to new and exciting places

  • Manage and build creative relationships, while being able to find new freelancers and agencies as needed – this person has a strong network of local established creatives in NYC and LA

  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by Editorial Director
     

Skills & Qualifications:

  • BFA in Graphic Design, Photography, or related field preferred

  • 4+ years of experience as an editorial art director in a fast-paced media environment

  • Extensive industry experience in art direction, with a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in editorial digital design, typography, and visual storytelling

  • A multidisciplinary understanding across design, photography, video, art, etc.

  • Knowledge of digital and print production across editorial and marketing collateral

  • Sophisticated design aesthetic and refined taste with a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of visual culture, for the purpose of curating and developing the brand’s vision

  • Creative problem-solver who can think conceptually and work quickly under tight deadlines

  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate effectively across teams

  • Candidates should be highly organized, deadline-driven, and adept at managing multiple projects in a fast-paced, high-profile environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work with an editorial team, managing freelancers, and collaborating with other designers

  • The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in contemporary media and curiosity for discovering new creatives across mediums, ensuring that their work upholds Roc Nation’s design standards while introducing innovative and culturally resonant storytelling

  • Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed

The expected compensation for this position is:

$104,000.00 USD - $130,000.00 USD

** Pay is based on a number of factors including market location, qualifications, skills, and experience.
