Job Description

Radio studio assistants provide vital support in the development and day-to-day production of local and national radio. In this role, you'll give practical assistance to programme producers and presenters to ensure that shows run as smoothly as possible.

You'll undertake key administrative activities as well as assisting in planning, researching and producing live and pre-recorded radio programmes. Assistants often have creative input on the development of new shows or features.

The broad scope of the role, encompassing production and technical skills, means that it is a common starting point for a career in radio.


Common tasks are likely to include:

* undertaking general research for programmes
* administrative duties
* arranging and overseeing guest visits and freelance staff
* maintaining up-to-date contact lists
* producing transcripts, programme logs and running orders
* recording programme costs
* preparing contracts and payments for guests and contributors
* answering and archiving details of calls for phone-ins and competitions
* archiving past programmes
* booking resources, facilities, studio time and equipment
* securing clearances and licences as necessary
* editing audio packages with digital editing software
* assisting with time-keeping and the recording of transmissions
* supporting the production team
* 'driving the desk' for some pre-recorded or live programmes
* contributing to the creative input of a show, for example writing cues and updating scripts
* liaising with publicity departments about programme trailers and competition prizes
* updating the programme or station website and ensuring that the on-air and online content are the same.

You will normally have the opportunity to undertake other ad-hoc duties and contribute your ideas. If you work for a smaller station, you may have more creative input and your role could include more high-profile activities, such as:

* researching and interviewing guests
* researching news stories and pitching new ideas
* creating and producing items of a programme
* choosing music
* presenting shows or small sections of a programme, such as news items and reviews of music, films or books.

Studio Requirements.
1. Basic DAW Knowledge
2. Basic MS Excel Knowledge
3. Comfortable in writing small descriptions about mixes.

Audio Mastering:

1. Make Sure all sets from all different computers used for streaming are copied onto Mac mini in the respective Ableton Folder.
2. Check the audio for quality and corruption.
3. Audio needs to be levelled out anywhere -3db to -7db. Then apply Fab filter levelling plugins accordingly.
4. If there are dry Vocals, or Interviews on the mix, make sure consistent levels are maintained.
5. If the Show has its own Jingle put current boxout jingle.
6. While exporting correct nomenclature has to be followed and the audio is exported into the the respective show/event folder.

Audio/Mix Archiving:
Artowork and tracklists

1. Make sure images and tracklists have been received and archived in the correct folders on Google Drive.

Mixes and Audio .wavs/ .mp3 itunes backp

1. There are 2 back-ups of year 01. One single hard drive + A copy on 4tb Main storage drive.
2. There will similarly be 2 back-ups of year 02, one main drive + another on the same 4tb main storage.
3. A back-up of all files needs to be done meticulously every 2 months, so as to be able to free up space on Google drive and also stay organised.
4. Itunes .mp3’s are always backed up, but never deleted.
5. Ableton projects and final masters.wavs are always backed up, then deleted off the drive after double checking everything and confirming all content is in fact, backed up.

Uploads & Website updating:
1. Upload 320kbps.mp3 files to Mixcloud.
2. Go through the mix and make sure the correct mix is being uploaded.
3. Make sure correct nomenclature is followed for each show and mix.
4. Choose up to 5 appropriate genre tags for each mix.
5. After publishing the post, the mix has to put in its respective playlist.
6. Mix will now have to be archived on the website under the correct show.
