Job Description

Job Title: Embedded Software Technical Team Lead (m/f/d)

Term: Full-time, Permanent

Based: Berlin

Salary: Dependent on Experience

Are you passionate about engineering and its application to acoustics and audio reproduction?

Do you have a strong background in embedded software engineering, some recent leadership experience and a desire to lead and inspire a small but growing team?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then we’d love to hear from you!

At ADAM we're incredibly passionate about audio and acoustics. We're looking for a forward-thinking engineering leader to join our pro-audio team, who can lead a small but growing team of embedded SW & DSP developers and contractors, as they develop our next generation of studio monitors.

What you’ll be doing

We are growing our delivery engineering department, and this role is a key part of establishing a new engineering leadership team. You and your team will be collaborating closely with the research, product management and wider engineering teams, supporting early product definition and prototyping, developing products through to market launch, and supporting established products with feature updates and maintenance.

For each product you will collaborate with the product management and engineering teams to understand the customer needs and any constraints. You’ll capture the embedded SW and DSP requirements and define the appropriate architecture, balancing these with good development practice, component costs, and ROI across the portfolio of products and product ranges. Where new DSP or control technologies are needed, you’ll collaborate closely with the Research and Innovation team to develop proofs-of-concept and reusable solutions ahead of defining the product delivery approach.

You’ll be hiring new talent, and developing and coaching your team, to help them deliver the exciting roadmap of new products. You’ll also engage with other engineering teams across the group, collaborating on shared technology initiatives, and sharing learning and improvement ideas between the other parts of the Focusrite family.

You’ll report to the Director of Product Delivery and be a part of the Engineering Leadership Team.

Key activities

  • Leading the embedded software team, empowering them to deliver well planned and executed solutions and facilitating excellent engineering decision making
  • Establishing and continuously evolving the development tools, processes and techniques, to ensure delivery of efficient, testable, high quality, re-usable and maintainable code.
  • Working closely with the Hardware (electronics) and Application Software team (or contractors), and supporting your team in establishing technical development approaches for each product.
  • Working closely with Quality Assurance and Production Engineering teams to ensure that development, test, and build considerations are aligned.
  • Identifying common technologies between products to leverage scale and maximise ROI.
  • Contribute to hands on code development and code reviews.
  • Energising your team, staying focused on the key goals whilst fostering a sense of fun and creativity.
  • Representing the team’s interests in technical, project status, roadmap and staffing meetings.
  • Hiring new talent to grow the team to meet the product roadmap requirements.
  • Assigning appropriate team members to each project and where necessary engaging with contractors to achieve business goals.

An ideal candidate is likely to be

  • A good communicator who is able to articulate complex problems to a range of audiences.
  • An effective leader with good interpersonal skills, empathy, and the desire to build a capable and successful team.
  • Technically proficient and curious, with hands on experience of a range of embedded SW development languages, real-time architectures and CI/Dev tools e.g. C, C++, scripting, bare metal, RTOS, DSP, Git, Jenkins, Artifactory
  • Familiar with a range of embedded processors and how to help the team select the most suitable.
  • Comfortable collaborating closely with electronics engineers on embedded systems, balancing the implications of decisions on both electronics and embedded SW disciplines.
  • Knowledgeable in approaches to robust embedded SW design e.g. requirements capture, story boarding, UML, documentation.
  • Able to guide the use of appropriate development methodologies such as peer review, TDD, unit testing, XP and automation.
  • Able to guide the use of appropriate planning approaches, balancing the needs of concurrent and interdependent software and hardware development eg Kanban, Scrum, Waterfall
  • Interested and inquisitive about audio, acoustics, and technology.
  • Comfortable working in spoken and written English. German language skills would also be an advantage.

If you want to be part of a creative team, involved in the development of industry leading audio equipment in an exciting pro audio company which is committed to grow and evolve, we would love to hear from you.
