Spotify’s Content Unit is home to the creators, curators and partnership teams that fill Spotify with the music and podcasts our users love. 

Our Content Insights team sits at the intersection of art and science. It employs market and user research fields to illuminate the ways creative factors and audience dynamics craft the listening experience. The team works alongside a broader community of 20+ data scientists and content strategists to help drive Spotify’s content decisions. 

We are looking for an experienced user researcher to join the group to help inform Spotify’s music curation and podcast creation strategies.

In this role you will oversee a team that executes and commissions research to inform Spotify’s music curation strategy, podcast creation efforts, content marketing initiatives and new business exploration. You will both guide the direction of the team’s efforts, as well as oversee specific projects yourself. You’ll probe exciting questions like: What jobs are different content types performing for different audiences? What can we learn about the effectiveness of various creative factors in order to advise our own in-house productions? What are foundational insights around emerging platforms or business opportunities?

You will help both US and global teams understand listener behavior, audience segments, competitive trends and creative insights to drive Spotify’s strategy in becoming the #1 audio company in the world.

What you’ll do:

  • Organize and manage a team of 4+ market researchers and user researchers

  • Set the team’s strategic direction in collaboration with team members and leadership

  • Coordinate the team’s project roadmap and resource allocation to ensure they meet partner needs and drive towards strategic vision—while also staying within budget and timelines

  • Advise team members on all their projects to ensure team output meets quality standards

  • Help develop team members’ skill sets

  • Plan and execute research projects to illuminate the consumption preferences of music and podcast listeners

  • Commission and coordinate work from external research vendors

  • Build and improve the team’s internal and cross-functional processes and workflows

  • Collaborate with other Insights teams/individuals across the organization

  • Work from our office in New York 

Who you are:

  • 8+ years of experience in market research or user research, particularly around media topics

  • Prior experience overseeing a team of researchers and spear-heading projects that involve cross-functional teams

  • Expertise at coordinating qualitative studies (e.g. designing discussion guides, conducting in-depth interviews, synthesizing findings)

  • Expertise at coordinating survey-related research (e.g., questionnaires, advanced sampling and weighting strategies)

  • Experience combining qualitative and quantitative insight streams to craft meaningful takeaways

  • Ability to provide structure and rigor to ambiguous problems

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
